Manatee Bedtime Story for Ages 5-7: A Slow Florida Winter Story

Manatees at the Warm Spring is a slow bedtime story for children ages 5 to 7, set at a Florida spring on a cold winter evening. You are the child lying on a boardwalk, watching a manatee glide in from the cold river to the warm clear water, graze on seagrass, come up for a breath, and settle down to rest beside her calf.

It is a PDF to read aloud, about six minutes at a gentle pace. Short sentences, repeated phrases and lighter-coloured pause lines ("Breathe in... and out.") let a grown-up slow right down as the story does. Nothing frightening happens; there is no problem to solve and no one in danger.

The story gently teaches real wildlife facts: Florida springs run at about 72 degrees Fahrenheit, manatees need water warmer than about 68 degrees, and a grown manatee is nine or ten feet long. It also covers how long manatees spend eating, how often they come up to breathe, and how long they can rest under water.

What is inside (8 US Letter pages, prints on A4 too): a cover, a short note on how to read it aloud, five pages of story, and a last page for grown-ups listing each fact with its source (U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission). Good for winter bedtimes, and for families after a trip to a spring or an aquarium.
