A tracker for a child's first fast

Whether a child fasts at all, at what age, and for how much of the day is a decision for your family and your own religious guidance, not for us. This page is for the day after that decision has already been made.

What we are not going to tell you

How old a child should be to fast, whether a partial or symbolic fast is appropriate, and what a first fast should look like are questions for your own family, your imam, or people in your community — not for a printable-craft website. We are not qualified to rule on any of it and would not try.

A tracker for the day itself

Once a family has decided how the day will work, a simple chart the child colours in — hour by hour, or step by step through the day — gives them something to hold and check, the same way a routine chart helps at bedtime. The tracker does not need to say anything about rules; it just needs to mark the hours the child is actually keeping.

Mark it, however small

A short note, a sticker, or a small family moment at the end of the day the tracker was used for turns a first attempt — however partial — into something remembered, rather than something that just happened.

Questions people ask

At what age should a child start fasting?

That is a decision for your family and your own religious guidance. We are not going to give an age.

Is a partial or shortened fast acceptable?

Practice varies by family and community — ask your imam or the people who guide your family’s practice, not us.

What if the tracker does not match what our family actually does?

Use whatever part is useful and change the rest. It is a blank structure for you to fill in, not a set of rules.
