What to look for in a large-print word search

"Large print" on a listing title is a claim, not a measurement, and different sellers mean quite different things by it.

Check the actual point size, if it is stated

Some listings state the font size used in the grid, typically somewhere from 14 to 20 point for something genuinely large-print; others just use the phrase without a number. If no size is given, judge from the preview at actual scale rather than a zoomed-in thumbnail, which always looks larger than the printed page will be.

Grid density matters as much as letter size

A large font in a dense, tightly packed grid can still be hard to scan, because the letters sit close together and the eye loses its place. Visible spacing between letters, not just large letters, is the real test for anyone with low vision or an older reader.

Word list length should match who is doing it

A children's word search generally works best with six to twelve words in a smaller grid; a large-print puzzle for an older adult often keeps a similar word count in a much bigger grid, which changes the difficulty as well as the visibility. Check the word count against the person who will actually be doing it.

Answer key: present or not, and where

Some packs include an answer key on a separate page; others do not include one at all. If the puzzle is for someone who may want to check their own answers without help, confirm an answer key is included before buying.

What we make, plainly labelled

Our own word search sets are ours, and they follow one theme through the grid — a specific holiday or a full year of Jewish calendar vocabulary, rather than an unrelated general word list — with word count and grid size stated in the listing rather than left to guesswork from the thumbnail.

Questions people ask

Is there a standard definition of large print?

No. It is a marketing term, not a regulated size. Always check the stated font size or judge the preview at its true printed scale rather than trusting the phrase alone.

Are word searches useful beyond entertainment?

They are commonly used for vocabulary reinforcement in children and for sustained visual scanning in adults, though that is a general observation, not a health claim about any specific product.

Should the grid be printed larger than the page it comes on?

No. Check that the grid fits fully within a standard page in the file as sold, rather than needing to be scaled up at a print shop to stay legible.
