Which day is Karva Chauth?

The short answer

In 2026, Drik Panchang gives two different dates, one page for each place: Wednesday 28 October for Washington, D.C. and Thursday 29 October for New Delhi.

The two Drik Panchang pages print the same starting moment for the lunar day (tithi): 3:36 PM in Washington on 28 October, which is 1:06 AM on 29 October in New Delhi (the conversion is ours). Each page gives the date for its own place. We do not pick one, and the Drik Panchang pages we read print no rule for choosing the day from those times. If you live in the US, look up the moonrise in your own city and ask your family, your mandir or your community which day they keep.

For 2027 the two places we read agree. We did not read other cities, so the same check applies.

What the printed times show

Drik Panchang says Karwa Chauth falls on the Chaturthi of Krishna Paksha in the Hindu month of Kartik, and that by the Amanta calendar the month is Ashwin. Ishvaram gives the same day as Kartika Krishna Chaturthi and says it names months the Purnimanta way. For the place it is set to, Drik Panchang prints the date, when the Chaturthi tithi begins and ends, and the moonrise. It prints no rule for choosing the day from those times, and Ishvaram states a rule for the tithi only.

This is our own reading of the printed 2026 times, not a rule that either page states. The tithi starts at one moment, which the two clocks write differently:

  1. Washington, D.C.: the tithi begins at 3:36 PM on 28 October (EDT). Moonrise that evening is 7:55 PM, inside the tithi, and the page gives 28 October.
  2. New Delhi: that same moment is 1:06 AM on 29 October (IST). The evening of the 28th comes before the tithi has started. Moonrise on the 29th is 8:17 PM, inside the tithi, and the page gives 29 October.

EDT and IST are 9½ hours apart, which is enough to move one moment across midnight (our arithmetic). Each page is set to its own place.

What this means for you

If you live in the US, check the moonrise for your own city. We read only Washington, D.C. and New Delhi, so we cannot tell you which date a different city falls on. Look for a calendar set to your own city and compare its tithi times and moonrise with the ones here.

Follow your mandir, family or community. This page does not rule on which date is right.

The reading above is ours. It uses the tithi and moonrise times printed on those pages.
