How to sell digital downloads without a business account

Not every seller has a registered business, and not every seller needs one just to put a single file in front of a buyer.

What a business account is actually for, on a marketplace

A marketplace business account exists to tell the platform, and sometimes the buyer, who is legally behind the sale — useful for a shop that is scaling, less useful for someone testing whether one printable sells at all. Setting one up is a separate task from making and listing the file itself, and it is the step that stops a lot of first-time sellers before they have sold anything.

Different marketplaces draw that line differently: some require it before a single listing goes up, others only once sales or payout volume cross a threshold. Either way, it is a platform-level requirement, not something the digital file itself needs in order to be sellable.

What listing without one looks like, with us

We do not require a business account to list a file: the listing fee is 10¢, renewed every four months, and the only charge on a sale is the card’s own processing cost passed through plus 3%. There is no step in between making the file and listing it that asks for a business registration.

From making the file to having it listed is as many steps as the file itself needs and no more - nothing about the process asks who is behind the listing before it can go live.

What this page is not: tax or legal advice

Selling without a business account on a listing platform is a different question from whether your sales need to be reported, registered or taxed in your own country or state — that answer depends on where you live and how much you sell, and it is not something a marketplace comparison page is qualified to tell you. This page covers what a specific marketplace requires to list a file; it does not cover what your own government requires of you once you have sold one. See the actual listing fee numbers, with no business-account step assumed, at /tools/fees.

The listing fee is the same either way

The $0.20 Etsy listing fee, or our 10¢, is charged the same way whether or not a business account sits behind the listing — setting one up does not raise or lower either number. Skipping the business-account step changes what the platform knows about the seller, not what it charges per listing or per sale, which is why the fee comparison elsewhere on this site holds regardless of that step.

What a business account tends to add instead is time before the first listing goes live: forms to fill in, details to verify, a step that has nothing to do with the file itself. A seller who skips that step is not getting a discount on the fee stack — they are just not paying the time cost of a step the fee stack never charged for in the first place.

Weigh that time cost against what the business account would actually buy you before deciding either way, rather than defaulting to whichever option looks faster on the surface.

Questions people ask

Do I need a business to list a single printable?

Not with us - listing does not require a business account, only a file and a price.

Does selling without a business account mean I do not owe any tax on it?

That is a separate question this page does not answer - whether a sale needs to be reported or taxed depends on local rules we are not able to advise on.

Is a business account required to receive payment?

See the separate guide on getting paid by PayPal email for what receiving a payout actually requires.
