Tracing a number and knowing what it means are two different skills, and a good tracing sheet for this age tries to build both at once, not just the shape.
By the time a child can reliably trace and recognize 1 through 10, they usually have the pencil control and number sense to extend further on their own, with far less repetition needed per new digit. The first ten numbers are where the real motor and recognition work happens.
2, 3, and 5 are the most commonly reversed digits at this age, because their starting motion is easy to begin from either side without the shape looking obviously wrong to a child. Watch the starting point on these three more closely than on a number like 1 or 7.
A sheet with a printed number alongside a matching set of dots or objects to count does more than a bare digit to trace, because it connects the symbol to what it actually represents. Have your child count the dots out loud before tracing the number next to them.
Two or three numbers, traced slowly with attention to the starting point and counted alongside a matching set, holds a preschooler's attention better than all ten in one go. Stopping while it is still going well matters more than finishing the page.
Free-hand writing of the same number from memory, then simple counting tasks that use the number in context — "put three blocks in the cup" — are the next steps once tracing is reliable. Tracing alone, repeated indefinitely, stops adding much once the shape is secure.
Alongside each other works better than either first. A sheet that pairs the traced number with a set of objects to count teaches the symbol and the quantity together.
Very common early on. Tracing the shape and understanding the quantity develop somewhat separately, and pairing a countable set with each traced number is what closes that gap.
Their starting stroke can begin from either side without immediately looking wrong to a young child, which makes the correct starting point worth pointing out directly rather than assuming it will self-correct.
