The Bakery Before Dawn Bedtime Story

7 pagesPrintable PDFInstant download$2.99

Every morning your five-year-old squeezes a slice of bread and asks how it got so puffy, and every morning there's no time to explain before the bus. Save the answer for bedtime, told slowly, from nine o'clock to dawn.

The Bakery Before Dawn is a slow bedtime story for children ages 3 to 6 who ask how bread gets puffy. You are in bed while, down the street, a baker mixes flour, water, salt and a pinch of yeast, covers the bowl and lets it rest. The story follows the dough through the night, from nine o'clock to dawn, with breathing pauses written between the scenes.

It gently teaches three true things: yeast is a tiny living thing that eats sugars, it lets out bubbles of carbon dioxide, and the stretchy gluten in flour holds those bubbles so the dough grows. It also explains, in a sentence a child can repeat, why cool dough works slowly and gets a long rest.

What is inside the 7-page PDF: a picture cover (page 1); the story in four short parts, about 640 words, roughly 6 to 7 minutes read aloud slowly (pages 2 to 5); a one-page bake-together card for an overnight no-knead loaf, with oven steps marked for an adult (page 6); and a page for grown-ups listing each fact in the story with where it comes from (page 7). The card's quantities and timings are adapted from a published recipe (Garnish & Glaze's No-Knead Bread, a version of the Jim Lahey method), which is named and linked on page 7. We have not baked it ourselves, so bake it once on your own before baking it with a child.

Print it or read it from a tablet, in dim light if you like. The text is set at a large, easy reading size. Not a custom story: the child is "you", with no name or gender.
