Rain on the Roof Bedtime Story for Ages 2-4: Where Raindrops Go

A slow bedtime story for a toddler or preschooler who is unsettled by the sound of rain on the roof or the window above the bed. Rain on the Roof turns the tapping into a lullaby, then follows one raindrop on its trip: from a cloud, onto the roof, into a puddle, up into the air with the morning sun, and back into a cloud again.

It is written for ages 2 to 4: short sentences, lots of sound words (tip, tap, pitter-patter, plink, splish), gentle pauses with breathing cues, and nothing frightening. The child is "you", with no name or gender, so any child can be the one tucked in.

What is inside, in 9 US Letter pages: a cover; seven story pages, each with a simple drawing; and a page for the grown-up with the science in the story (rain falls when the drops in a cloud grow big enough, clouds are made of water, the sun lifts water into the air, and the water goes round and round), each with its source from NOAA and the National Weather Service. The story is about 380 words and takes around four minutes to read aloud slowly.

How to use it: print it or read it from a tablet in dim light. Read the sound words softly and, if you like, tap your fingers lightly on the blanket in time. It is a PDF to read aloud, not a recording. It does not promise that any child will sleep.
