A thing to look forward to only works if the child can hold it in their head all day. That rules out anything complicated and anything conditional. The library. The long way home past the diggers. Jumping in the puddle by the gate.
This is the whole mechanism. The value is not the treat — it is that the day ended the way you said it would. Two broken promises and the sentence stops working at all.
Walk a different way home. Find three red things. Post a letter. Feed the ducks. Climb the wall along the path. Pick something for dinner. Call Grandma on the walk. Draw together for ten minutes. Read in a den made of the sofa cushions. Go to the library. Look for the moon in daylight. Collect conkers. Sit on the front step with a drink. Water the plants. Choose the music in the car.
Not one of these is an event. That is the point. What a child remembers is not the size of the thing — it is that they were with you, and it happened.
A bribe is contingent on behaviour. This is not: it happens regardless, which is exactly what makes it something to rely on rather than something to earn.
Then the thing is thirty seconds long. Stopping at the same gate to look at the same cat counts, if it happens every day.
